Train Set Power Supplies

Some of the people looking to build a Hot Wire Foam Cutter are into model trains, many consider attaching their railroad set power supply to a cutter. In theory, a very good idea!

The problem with Train Set Power Supplies is that while many can provide the voltage required, they cannot supply the amperage / current. Generally speaking most of these power supplies are between 0.7-1.5 amps (either AC or DC).

You may certainly attempt to use of these models, but your wire may not heat up or if you over draw your power supply it could damage the internal components.

A user, just like you, contacted me and found a 50VA train power supply. He has used this power supply for years, using 30 gauge NiChrome Wire. He reports that there is a little wire deflection during cutting, but works well over all.
