Tattoo Power Supplies are a simple cheap option for most table top and hand held cutters. This type of power supply used to be my favorite, but Bench Top Power Supplies have been out performing the Tattoo power supplies time and time again. And for under $100USD, commercial bench top power supplies will outperform any “hot wire power supply” you can get through well known websites.

Tattoo power supplies are simple variable voltage power supplies, that have a top end amperage rating of 2 amps. The older generation supplies used to be able to output a bit more without activating the Over-Current Protection. But the newer generation supplies seem to clip and cut out more frequently, which makes long standing cutting difficult. You might want to spend an extra few dollars and get a bench top supply.

Speaking from personal experience, these are ideal for using 26 Gauge NiChrome Wire between 8-12 inches.

Don’t forget to consider the Mechanics and Over Current Protection of power supplies when choosing your model.

One added benefit of these power supplies is that they often come with foot switches that allow you to easily turn on and off your cutting device, which is a great safety feature for both the power supply but also anyone who walks away from their cutter.

Depending on your model, you may also have other connectivity options like 1/4” Mono Plug and/or DC power connectors.
